Sikh New Year Celebrations on 14 March 2026 starting 3 PM
Guru Nanak Punjabi School (GNPS/the School) is a community language school run by the Australian Sikh Association Limited (ASA), which is located within the Glenwood Gurdwara Sahib complex. GNPS is registered with Community Languages Schools, Department of Education NSW.
Besides running the School, GNPS management also provides teachers for Special Religious Education (SRE) classes in the local public schools to teach Sikhism.
The aim of GNPS is to:
Teach Punjabi language and basics of Sikhism
Provide teachers for SRE classes on Sikhism in public schools
Promote multiculturalism and interaction with wider Australian communities
GNPS is managed by a School Committee made up of volunteers and is headed by the ASA’s Education Director. It was first started in 1985 with a few casual students to teach Punjabi. Eventually, in 1997, the School was formally registered as a Community Languages School with the NSW Department of Education. Currently, more than 500 students are enrolled in the School and the teaching staff consists of approximately 35 well qualified Punjabi language teachers. In addition to meeting the needs of the local Punjabi community, GNPS has also been attracting the interest of students with English and other non-Punjabi speaking backgrounds.
The School has 11 class rooms, an admin office and a facilities room. All class rooms are fully air conditioned and fitted out with audio visual equipment. In addition, the School is well stocked with learning aids including a large range of bilingual books in Punjabi and English.
